The Main Parts of a Digital Camera

There are thousands of different digital cameras available on the market. However they all have the same main parts, even though they may be located in different places. Learning what these parts are and what they are used for will help you understand your camera and take better pictures.

Lens

The lens on a digital camera is located on the front. The lens is made of class and other materials. The lens is want focuses on the objects, to capture the picture.

Shutter Button

This is a small button normally located on the top of the camera that triggers it to take a picture.

Battery Compartment

All digital cameras have battery compartments. This is where the user inserts the batteries. Some cameras are rechargeable or have docking stations that charge the batteries.

Display Screen

The display screen is a small screen on the back of the camera that lets you set up the image before capturing it. On most newer models, the display screen is also where you can alter the setting of the camera and view or delete photos.

Flash

The flash is located on the front of the camera and is the light that is used to brighten darker pictures.

Power Switch

This is the button or switch that turns the camera off, to save battery life.

Memory Card

Memory cards are what the camera saves the pictures to. Memory cards for cameras are normally called SD cards or Micro SD cards. These cards are available with various different storage capacities.

Memory Card Slot

The memory card slot is a small port normally on the side of the camera where the memory card is inserted for use. Most cameras have small doors that cover slot to protect it while the camera is in use.

USB Port

A USB port is a small connector port that uses a wire or a flip out USB connector to attach to a computer. The USB port is used to transfer pictures from the camera to a computer if a SD card reader is unavailable.

Microphone

Most digital camera will also record video clips, because of this, a microphone is built into the camera to record the sound during the video. Most of these microphones are almost undetectable. They are normally covered up with a hole or a design with holes to the sound to enter the camera.
